A simple walk

I’m slowing getting used to working up high. I didn’t think much of it at first but after three weeks I’ve realised that there is something about working in a high-rise that gives me a different sense. Something not quite right at first.

I headed off on foot to return a DVD to the local video store tonight, then continued almost all the way to Mt Eden Village through the back streets. It’s a beautiful summer’s evening – someone was practicing the piano with the window open, a young man was watching a movie on his laptop on the balcony and Grandma’s (she’s getting a lot of airing in the blogs lately!) old house was looking tidy and calm. A peaceful warm night.

I’m tired in the evening nowadays, learning the ropes at my new work is taking a lot of energy and walking tonight up to the video shop had unexpectedly good consequences. Simple really, I felt grounded.

I often walk on the waterfront and it’s grand, great views and you never tire of it. But a walk around the streets was something very special. Summer, local people, crickets, and that simple feeling of being connected with what’s around. This could be the good old days of Summer 2012 finally upon us so don’t miss it. And it’s yet another moment, when feeling not quite right that I’ve found peace in a simple connection.

Just a simple walk.

  1. Good thoughts. High rises are interesting places. Closer to what?

Just finished reading Michael Lewis Boomerang: The Meltdown Tour.
    A great read. And sobering.
But what is interesting is; When was it ever ok to design and sell a product that you knew was going to fail just so you could also bet on it failing and so get paid twice? For that is what some of the financial bonds seemed to be.

  2. Well said Stephen. The demands and technology of modern life often deprive us of the most enjoyable yet simple of pleasures, walking being one of them. This mornng, after leaving my car for a service, decided to walk the five kilometres or so home. Unfortunately, no leafy streets or much in the way of inspiring gardens along the route to admire; so set to at a really fast pace (aided by excellent sports shoes), striding it out with ease, and an amazing feeling of wellness and positive thoughts. Couldn’t help thinking as I charged along – I can’t possibly be in my —— year! Walking certainly brings both physical and pschological benefits. And the risk of damage to ones body/joints long term is minimal!

  3. Great stuff – good to get out walk. I’ve found that the more busier I get the longer I need to walk. It’s a bit of a paradox – but it works!

Your post reminds me of an old gaelic proverb:

“May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be ever at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face, And the rains fall soft upon your fields”

    Walk on.

  4. A simple walk is sometimes all you need – great to remember the importance of that simple connection and how important it is to my quality of life to find ways which ground and connect me daily – been walking every day in Kinloch,Taupo this past month – experimenting with living the city/country life – coming to Auckland for business every few weeks as needed. The contrast between the quiet place in nature and the city is quite profound – and shocking coming from here to Auckland…I found it much more challenging to ‘connect’ when living in the middle of Ellerlsie –
now, it’s so much easier to connect with the earth/ nature – yet needing to find that balance of social connection as well.
Not sure the phone and skype and internet/ email/ blogging is enough – need the face to face time as well…enjoying this experiment!..thanks for giving me pause to reflect, Stephen 🙂 Ironically, as soon as David and I re-situated to Taupo last month, I’ve had 3 past clients and 3 new ones want to see me in Auckland!…ideally, I’m looking for a situation where I can come up, have a place to stay and a place to see clients on a regular basis once or twice a month as well as perhaps run a group…within easy access of the city – putting this out to all I know…seeing what opens up.
